We were pretty certain we wanted a fish flag for North Dakota. We already had a Bison Flag but it just didn’t resonate with folks the way it did in 1888, so we thought some updating was due.
Then our graphic designer made it difficult by asking what fish we were going to feature. Heck, we design T-shirts - it’s not like we’re amateur ichthyologists in our spare time. We apparently had a choice of walleye, perch or northern pike. Perch was an easy out. No offense, but I wouldn’t know a perch if it sat on the bar stool next to me, so it was down to the other two.
Northern Pike is the state fish of North Dakota so it received some strong consideration for this flag. But then that same Guide to North Dakota informed me that the state beverage is milk, so I knew right there that no one had updated that list since Father Knows Best went off the air.
So walleye it is and everyone seems happy from West Fargo to Watford City. And because we love alliteration, it had to be not just The Fish Flag, but the Frolicking Fish Flag of North Dakota. Available in Deep Heather crew or V-neck shirts in sizes Small to 2XL. Whether you’re sitting in a boat on Lake Sakakawea or hunkered down over a fishing hole on frozen Devil’s Lake, you need to be wearing this shirt.
